A study from antivirus vendor Avast suggests that factory reset the Android operating system is not effective in eradicating your personal data from your old device.

The company is purchasing twenty Android smartphone on eBay and more than 40,000 photos, 750 emails and text messages and 250 contacts, along with the identity of the previous owner. There are several steps you can take to secure your personal data when doing a factory reset.

1. Encryption

Before doing a factory reset, you can encrypt it first. To perform encryption on Android device, you can open the menu settings> security> select Encrypt phone.

2. Factory reset
The next thing is to do a factory reset. On Android devices, there is a factory reset in the settings menu> backup & reset> Factory Data reset. To ensure your data stays safe, you should do a backup first.

3. Insert dummy data
Following the first and second steps may be enough for most people. But this measure is able to increase the protection of personal data when you delete.

4. Perform a factory reset again
After the dummy data is entered, do a factory reset again so that your personal data is getting harder to find. This is because your personal data has been buried under the dummy data.

If you still doubt, repeat the third and fourth steps as many times as you want. For most people, following the first and second step is enough.
